VOX Alternatives for iPhone and Mac (2026)
Prices, ratings and advertising disclosures on this page come from the US App Store listings and were checked on the date above. They change — check the listing before you buy anything, ours included.
People leave VOX over the pricing, not the playback. Its App Store listing carries at least four overlapping products — VOX Premium at $49.99 a year, a monthly plan, a separate LOOP subscription, and a Radio purchase — and working out which one you are actually on is harder than it should be. The one-time alternatives in 2026: Doppler at $9.00 (gorgeous, but no NAS and it needs iOS 26), Neutron at $12.99 upfront (serious DSP, hard interface), foobar2000 at nothing, Evermusic or Flacbox if you need consumer clouds and can live with ads — and Trove, ours, at $9.99 once for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch together. Here is each, and where ours is the weaker choice.

What VOX does well, and what sends people away
VOX (Coppertino) has been around since 2014 and has a real identity: a clean player, a good-looking Mac app, and VOX Cloud, which will hold an unlimited library for you so your phone does not have to. 4.2 stars from about 3,150 ratings, updated July 2026. If unlimited cloud storage for a huge lossless collection is the problem you are solving, VOX is one of very few apps that even tries.
The friction is the commercial model. As of September 2026 Apple lists these among VOX's in-app purchases: VOX Premium Subscription at $49.99, a 1 Month Plan at $4.99, VOX Premium + Cloud at $8.99, a LOOP for VOX Subscription, and Radio at $9.99. Several appear more than once at different prices — tiers from different eras stacked on top of each other. Whatever the intent, the effect on a new user is that the question "what do I need to buy?" has no obvious answer, and the answer is recurring.
The other common complaint is simpler: your library lives with them. VOX Cloud is the centre of the product. That is the feature for some people and the objection for others.
The one-time alternatives
Doppler — $9.00, once, and it looks it
No advertising, 4.6 stars from about 1,500 ratings, and the most obviously well-made interface of anything here. If VOX's subscriptions are your whole complaint and your music is on the phone, this is the shortest path.
Two constraints. It requires iOS 26, so an older iPhone is disqualified outright. Its last iPhone update was October 2025, roughly eleven months before this was written. And, importantly if you are coming from VOX's Mac app: Doppler for Mac is a separate app with its own price. You buy the platform, not the product.
Doppler also has no WebDAV or SMB. If you were using VOX Cloud because your library does not fit on a phone, Doppler has no answer for that at all — you are back to choosing what to sync.
Neutron — the audiophile end
$12.99 paid upfront, no free tier. 64-bit processing, parametric EQ, crossfeed, and the deepest DSP chain on iOS. 3.96 stars from about 200 ratings, the lowest here, essentially all of it about the interface rather than the sound. Buy it if you own a DAC and care about the signal path more than about browsing.
foobar2000 — free, and plain about it
Free, no in-app purchases, updated August 2026. Plays everything, organises nothing, and looks like the utility it is. A perfectly rational answer for a phone that plays folders.
Evermusic and Flacbox — if you need consumer clouds
If the VOX Cloud habit is really "my library is not on this device", Evermusic and Flacbox reach Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Yandex, FTP, WebDAV and SMB. Both are from the same developer, EVERAPPZ SL, both declare advertising on their App Store listings, and the lifetime unlocks are $59.99 and $69.99 respectively. You are trading a subscription for a large one-time payment and some ads — worth it for some people, not for others.
Trove — one purchase, four devices, no recurring anything
Ours. Trove is free to download. The unlock is $9.99 once. There is no subscription of any kind, no advertising in any tier, and one purchase covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch from a single App Store listing, because the entitlement is attached to your Apple Account rather than to a device. Coming from VOX, that is the specific contrast: no second purchase for the desktop, and nothing renews.
Instead of a cloud locker, Trove connects directly to your own storage — WebDAV or SMB, so a Synology, a TrueNAS box, Nextcloud, or any server you already run. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account to create. That is part of the $9.99 unlock, along with Apple Watch sync, tag write-back, smart playlists, the Mac's floating desktop lyrics window, and tap-to-sync lyrics. Every format, gapless playback, the 10-band equalizer, playlists and lyrics display are in the free app.
Where Trove is the wrong answer. There is no Trove cloud. If you like VOX because your 500 GB library lives on their servers and you never think about it, we do not replace that — you would need a NAS or a server of your own, and if you do not have one and do not want one, VOX is genuinely offering something we are not. Trove also requires iOS 17 or macOS 14, has no consumer-cloud connectors, and shipped in September 2026 against VOX's twelve years and three thousand ratings.

Leaving VOX without losing your library
The order matters more here than with the other apps on this page, because VOX Cloud holds files rather than pointing at them.
- Get your music out of VOX Cloud first, and confirm it downloaded. Do this before you cancel anything. A lapsed subscription is a bad moment to discover a gap.
- Cancel the right subscription. With several overlapping products on one listing, check Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions rather than trusting the app to tell you.
- Decide where the library will live instead. On the device if it fits; on a NAS over WebDAV or SMB if it does not. If you have never set that up, start here.
- Move one album, play it end to end, then move the rest.
Coming from the Mac side instead? The Swinsian and foobar2000 comparisons cover that ground.
Try Trove on your own library
Free to download. $9.99 once for WebDAV, SMB, Apple Watch sync and four more — on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch from the one purchase, and nothing renews.
